Notes on recently discarded breed specific legislation: identification and registration were to be compulsory for approximately 15 breeds of (fighting) dogs including Pitbull Terrier, Bull Terrier, Fila Braziliero, Mastiff (toutes origines), Tosa Inu, Band dog, Akita Inu, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Dogo Argentino - Dogue de Bordeaux, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire bull-terrier and Rottweilers. The breed specific legislation was subsequently cancelled by the Council of State in May, 1999. A seminar was organised on this subject on 18.03.2000. Six working groups were drafted to examine the Belgian dog problem at all levels. A copy of the proceedings, in French, can be seen here.

Important note: Although there is now no national legislation, local authorities can still introduce their own local legislation.
